COPYRIGHT

Journal of Caribbean Environmental Sciences and Renewable Energy (CESaRE) is a free open-access Journal, and authors who publish with CESaRE accept the following conditions:

• • • Authors retain copyright and grant CESaRE the exclusive licensing of the first publication, that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of its authorship and initial publication in this Journal.
    • Authors are free to copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format, and to remix, transform, and build upon the material, for any purpose, even commercially, with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in CESaRE. The author(s), however, does not have the right to publish a CESaRE publication in its current unaltered format within another journal for publication consideration, i.e. duplicated publications of any manuscript (including significant portions of copied text), this can be considered plagiarism and may result in the removal of the original manuscript from CESaRE archives.  
    • Authors should not post their submissions online (e.g. in institutional databases or on their personal websites) prior to or during the publication process, as this may create nomenclatural problems.

AUTHORSHIP

To ensure that submitted articles are original contributions, and to avoid copyright issues, authors must adhere to the following rules:

• • • All co-authors must be aware of and agree to the contents of the submission.
    • All co-authors agree with the Open Access policy of the Journal.
    • The corresponding author declares that the text, graphics and illustrations within are original, or that he/she has taken all the necessary steps to avoid a breach of copyright, by including the relevant citations.

PEER REVIEW

CESaRE applies a double-blind peer-review; it is, therefore, the responsibility of the Editorial Team to have the submission evaluated by members of the team who then assess it anonymously.

Every submission is treated with confidentiality.

PLAGIARISM

Authors are expected to contribute to their particular field of research by presenting original and relevant results, data or perspectives. As such, the authors may be asked to provide the original research data or findings on which their article is based for editorial review. Authors will also be expected to comply with the open access data requirements of the Journal. 

The following components are considered essential for an ethical publication: 

• • • data integrity 
    • clear presentation of the sources and techniques used 
    • acknowledgement of any contributors to data collection and research
    • acknowledgements of any funding agencies and/or previous institutions where (any part of ) the work was carried out.

As a result, authors must cite appropriate and relevant text, graphics and illustrations in support of the results presented in their article. Authors who have already published on the same topic are expected to include citations of this content wherever relevant; consideration should be made to avoid excessive and inappropriate self-citation.

Plagiarism under any circumstances is objectionable; any suspicion of plagiarism will be investigated by the Editorial Team.

No significant portion of the article being submitted to CESaRE should have been previously published in another publication (whether institutional or personal). Self-plagiarism should be avoided as much as possible; however, when text duplication from previous works is necessary, it must then be reported transparently and the previous works are to be fully cited in the article being presented to CESaRE.

RESEARCH MISCONDUCT

The falsification or intentional manipulation of data (supporting figures, images or illustrations) is unacceptable. Authors are expected to have and manage accurate records of their data. There should also be a proactive and ethical attitude towards data management (inclusive of, but not limited to data availability and quality checks). Data omission or the act of intentionally manipulating parts of the dataset to fit the desired study’s hypotheses will be considered as an act of fraud.

Illustrations used to present data by another author should not be manipulated, except for clarity purposes (e.g. adjustment of the contrast, colour etc.). When doing so, the author must ensure that the manipulation does not lead to the loss or misinterpretation of data. Methods or techniques used to enhance images must be described in the Material and Methods section of the paper, or at least in the caption accompanying the illustration.

CONFLICTS OF INTEREST

Conflict of interest can occur when someone is influenced in his/her choices or actions by personal or financial interest. To the best of the CESaRE team’s ability, every effort to mitigate possible occurrences of a conflict of interest between authors, reviewers and members of the Editorial Team will be made.

In the context of a CESaRE publication, several elements could seem questionable if the objectivity of the different agents of the publication is uncertain. As a result, the CESaRE Editorial Team takes each report of a potential conflict of interest into consideration and will evaluate it with the necessary vigilance.

OPEN ACCESS POLICY

CESaRE provides the free open access of its content on the premise that making research freely available to the public supports the ideology of greater global exchange of knowledge. The Journal is owned by the Journal of Caribbean Environmental Sciences and Renewable Energy (CESaRE), which self-finances the copy-editing, layout and online publication of the articles. Individual submissions are published on the CESaRE platform without paying any fees or charges. Readers are also allowed to access the published content for free.

REVIEW POLICY

All authors are obligated to participate in CESaRE’s peer-review process which will adhere to the outlined publication standards. Where necessary, authors may be required to make changes by the Editorial Team and correct any mistakes communicated to them. When these changes are identified, the authors are provided with a timeline for re-submitting the updated document. In each case, the authors and Editorial Team will come to a common understanding of the deadline – considerations will be made based on the nature and quantity of the requested changes.

THE CESaRE REVIEW PROCESS

Submitted articles which align with CESaRE’s scope and style will be sent to at least two reviewers by a member of the Editorial Team, once approved, a coordinating editor will be assigned.

CESaRE utilizes a double-blind peer-review process, this means that reviewers remain anonymous by default. However, if reviewers want their names to be communicated to the author, CESaRE will allow this.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF REVIEWERS

Reviewers are expected to objectively evaluate articles and inform members of the CESaRE Editorial Team of any potential conflict of interest.

All efforts to maintain the confidentiality of the submitted content that is being reviewed shall be implemented.

DISTRIBUTION OF CESaRE PUBLICATIONS

CESaRE publications are freely available at no charge on our website.

Authors are encouraged to disseminate their work – they can directly download the pdf files of their articles from the website and distribute electronic or printed copies to their colleagues, or distribute the URL from which the PDF files can be downloaded.

PRIVACY STATEMENT

The names, affiliations and email addresses entered on the CESaRE website will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this Journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or released to any other party.

POTENTIAL ISSUES

We do our best at CESaRE to avoid ethical issues before publication, however, anyone who suspects an ethical issue is encouraged to contact us. Every suspicion of an ethical issue, misconduct or conflict of interest will be investigated by the CESaRE Editorial Team.

INVESTIGATION

The Editor-in-Chief will conduct the investigation of any reported issues.

All members of the CESaRE Editorial Team, as well as reviewers and authors, are encouraged to provide their feedback and contributions to improve communication during the treatment of ethical issues. This input will allow for any potential issue to be remedied in a timely manner.

RESOLUTION OF ETHICAL PROBLEMS

If an article submitted to CESaRE is incriminated of any ethical issues and has not yet been published, the publication will be delayed until the problem is resolved. The article in question may be rejected if there is any evidence that the author(s) has (have) not respected the code of conduct outlined on this website.

If, however,  the article under question has already been published, the decision of the Editor-in-Chief will depend on the nature and severity of the problem:

• • • • If it is proven that the issue is only due to a difference of scientific point of view between the author and the complainant, the Journal will encourage a healthy and reasonable discussion. The complainant has the opportunity to also publish a paper in CESaRE at which point the original author has the right to address this response. This “dialogue” between articles, as with all the others submitted to CESaRE, will follow our evaluation process and will be reviewed before any editorial decision is made.
      • For minor issues, all individuals involved in the decision and publication process of the article are informed. If all can arrive at an agreement, the publication of an addendum in CESaRE will be implemented.
      • In very serious cases (plagiarism for example), the retraction of a publication can occur. The readers and all persons involved in the decision and publication process of the article will be informed.

The solution to any ethical issue can vary depending on the specific circumstance and will be evaluated accordingly. The CESaRE Editorial Team will always try to find the most appropriate solution and will involve every person or institution concerned by the specific ethical issues identified in the investigation.

JOURNAL ARCHIVING

In the unfortunate event that the Journal of CESaRE is no longer able to continue the publication of scientific articles and associated research, past Issues and affiliated publications will be archived on our website and all metadata will be maintained on Cross Ref.
